What You Should Never Put Down the Drain
Most of the clogs we clear could have been avoided. A drain is not a trash can, even if it sometimes looks like one. Here are the most frequent culprits and the good habits to adopt.
Habits that protect your pipes
Problems rarely come from a single incident, but from a slow buildup. A little cooled grease here, some hair there, and the pipe ends up narrowing.
- Grease and oils: pour them into a container, never down the sink, they harden as they cool.
- Wipes: even those claiming to break down belong in the trash.
- Food scraps: ground coffee, pasta and rice swell or clump together.
- Hair: install a small strainer in the shower and the tub.
- Chemical products: avoid mixing strong drain cleaners, they are dangerous and damage pipes.
To maintain, rinse regularly with very hot water, but not excessively on certain types of pipes. Slowing water is a message: act before everything blocks.
