When to Call an Electrician Instead of DIY
Many homeowners enjoy do-it-yourself projects, and that is great. But electricity is not a field where you learn by trial and error. A mistake can go unnoticed for years, then cause a real problem.
As a general rule, any job involving the electrical panel, wiring inside walls or a new installation should be entrusted to a qualified professional. The rules to follow vary from place to place, and an electrician knows them.
Signs it is time to call
- Breakers that trip often with no clear reason
- Lights that flicker or dim
- An outlet that is warm, discolored or gives off an odd smell
- Buzzing behind a wall or near a switch
If you notice any of these signs, do not wait. Avoid using the outlet or appliance involved and have the installation inspected. A problem caught early almost always causes less trouble than one that is ignored.
