How to Help Your Child Practice at Home

Learning an instrument happens largely between lessons. But practicing at home can quickly become a source of tension if you are not careful. Fortunately, a few simple habits help a great deal.

Secret number one: regularity. Ten minutes every day is better than one long session on Sunday night. Pick a fixed moment, such as after the afternoon snack, so practice becomes a reflex.

Small gestures that make a difference

  • Keep the instrument somewhere visible and easy to reach
  • Set up a quiet corner with no screen switched on nearby
  • Let your child play what they enjoy first, then the lesson material
  • Ask for a little family concert from time to time

Be present without becoming the teacher. Simply sit beside them, listen and point out progress, however small. Specific compliments, like 'I really liked your slow passage', are worth more than big vague praise.

Finally, remember that mistakes are part of learning. If a day is difficult, stop without drama and pick it up again tomorrow. The desire to play is more precious than perfection.
