Choosing a First Instrument Without Second-Guessing
Every week we are asked: 'Which instrument should I choose?' The answer depends less on difficulty than on what moves you when you listen to music.
Think about the tunes you hum without noticing. Do you hear a guitar, a voice, a piano? That first instinct is often the best compass. An instrument you love listening to is one you will want to practice.
Points to consider
- The age and size of the student, especially for string instruments
- The space available at home and how much noise the neighbors can tolerate
- The style of music you dream of playing
- The option of renting before buying
Speaking of buying, you do not need a top-of-the-line instrument to begin. A decent, well-adjusted model is more than enough. Ask your teacher for advice before purchasing: they will know how to guide you.
And if you are still hesitating, come and try one. Touching an instrument, feeling its weight and its sound, beats any explanation. Our teachers will be happy to introduce it to you with no commitment.
