Preventing Water Damage at Home

Water damage is rarely sudden. Most often a small sign goes unnoticed for weeks before a leak sets in. Fortunately, a few regular habits are enough to catch problems in time.
A walk around the house every few months
Get in the habit of inspecting the places where water flows. You do not need tools, only a bit of attention.
- Under sinks: look for dampness, stains or a musty smell.
- Around toilets: a soft floor or a base that moves deserves a look.
- Water heater: watch for water on the floor or rust at the fittings.
- Flexible hoses on washing machines and dishwashers: replace them when they show signs of wear.
- Outdoors: shut off and drain taps exposed to freezing.
Also know where your main shutoff valve is and make sure it closes properly. In case of a major leak, it is the first thing to do, even before calling us.
Finally, a water meter whose dial turns while everything is off gives away a hidden leak. In that case, do not wait: the earlier you act, the lighter the repairs.
